
COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION POLICIES:
MASTERS IN LITERATURE
Application
You may obtain application forms from the Graduate School office in Barnard Hall or from the secretary of the English Department. The deadline for applying to take the Exam in the Fall is October 1; in the Spring the application deadline is February 15. After you have submitted an application you will receive a letter shortly after the application deadline notifying you of the exact dates of the Exam and the room(s) in which it will be administered.
Dates for the Comprehensive
In the Fall the Comprehensive will usually be given on the first Friday and Saturday in November. In the Spring the Comprehensive will usually be given on the last Friday and Saturday in March. The Friday session will be conducted from 1:00-5:00 p.m. and the Saturday session will be conducted from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Retake Policy
If an exam does not pass, then the student may retake the comprehensive exam in another semester. The exam can be re-taken again, but before a student will be allowed a third attempt at the Comprehensive, he or she must obtain the signatures of his or her Graduate Advisor, the Chair of the English Department, and the Dean of the Graduate School.
