Rumors and the Internet: A Symbiotic Relationship

   A rumor is a bit of information that is passed from person to person, whether it's true or false. Some rumors are mostly harmless, but rumors can have serious consequences during a crisis, when the need for accurate information is most critical.

            In the wake of September 11, rumors have flourished—more so than in any point in history. Despite the best efforts of journalists, the news media have always contributed to the spread of rumors,  and local gossips have done their part to spread rumors in small towns. Do Students Consider Rumors News?

   Since September 11, CCSU students have found they consume both news and rumors more than ever. Almost daily, they have to filter what they hear in order to differentiate between the two. Although students are turning to news more since the attacks, they also hear many half-truths and rumors from the Internet and through gossip. It seems there is no clear-cut line to make a distinction between news and rumors for many students.
