Leopold Augustus Egg
(1816-1863)

English painter known for pictures based on historical incidents or episodes from literary works.  Egg also promoted younger artists, particularly the Pre-Raphaelites.  Egg's famous tryptich was exhibited untitled in 1858.  It reveals Egg's interest in serial narrative and dramatic situation.  His literary friends included Wilkie Collins and Charles Dickens.  He acted with Dickens in his amateur theatrical company.  He died in Algeria, where he was attempting to treat his asthma.
