The English Department invites students, professors and the general public to an all-day event that explores and celebrates the importance of writing and public speaking in the workplace, civic life and on campus. Learn practical tips about how to hone your public speaking skills, find out more about what writing skills employers expect in job applicants, and celebrate exceptional writers and public speakers from the CSUS community.  Essay Contest: The Power of One Book 

The deadline for submissions was March 14.  See the submission flyer for details and criteria.

FIRST PLACE: Kelly Lynn Nichols (click to read essay)

Kelly is currently a graduate student in the teacher certification program at Southern Connecticut State University. She earned an MFA in poetry from The New School in New York in New York City in 2005.

SECOND PLACE: Dario DiBattista Jr. (click to read essay)

Prior to coming to CCSU, Dario served in the Marines, including two tours in Iraq. He recently secured a summer internship through the prestigious Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars in Washington, D.C. A Political Science major and Creative Writing Minor, Dario is a senior.

Jane, a Junior at CCSU, is majoring in English and hopes to pursue a writing career when she graduates.
